Flexible Work
It's Time For More Flexible Work!
Technology Is Fundamentally Changing Traditional Ways Of Working with more opportunity for flexible work. Look around you, how many of your peers are working in a traditional way these days, or how many of them are talking about making a change in the way they work? As time goes on so do technological advances from cloud computing, screen sharing, collaboration software and video conferencing and these advances are encouraging a liberated workforce, transforming the way people produce and deliver work - not only that, but it is changing the way we interact with colleagues and customers. Research predicts that by 2020 half of the UK workforce will be working in a freelance capacity and contributing over £51bn to the economy. Highly professional and skilled professionals have already begun to move away from more traditional office-based work, choosing flexible working, freelance work and self-employment over the hustle and bustle of daily office life, spending hours commuting on crammed trains and roads. This new-found way of working is giving people a sense of empowerment and a better more fulfilled way of life. So this is all very well for workers but what about businesses? Well, this new way of working has actually been driven by businesses! Many companies have looked to streamline their business models to compete within an increasingly competitive and digital-first world. Businesses have to contend with online marketplaces dominating the industry - some with no physical stores and with a strategy to sell a product without actually owning the product - take Airbnb for example. These advances in technology have resulted in organisations needing an ‘asset-light’ and flexible work business model. There is no need for office space, no need for staff in-house and time for them to embrace a new and exciting way of working and advancing within their industry. Businesses should consider their ‘core-competencies’ and assess their needs from there, there are ‘non-core’ roles and functions that that fall outside of the basic remit and can be managed elsewhere, businesses can gain reputation by outsourcing some of these areas to specialists - giving them the opportunity to lead industry rather than fall behind. This means that instead of building in-house teams across all functions, businesses can respond to seasonal changes in requirements through an on-demand workforce to engage specialist suppliers, meaning businesses will save time, money and resource. An on-demand workforce represents the future of work, it is a trend that forward-thinking businesses can’t afford to ignore. The flexibility of this new way of working brings with it productivity, engagement, collaboration and demand - all factors that can only be a positive for your business.
